$6.8M WALARA GILBERT VALLEY REFURBISHMENT COMPLETED

A healthy crowd of more than 70 invited guests and community members braved the cold, wet and windy weather on the afternoon of Friday 25 July to celebrate the Official Opening.

Malcolm May, Walara Board Chair, proudly announced the opening of the $6.8 million redevelopment of Walara Gilbert Valley, marking a major milestone for aged care in the region and the broader Gilbert Valley community.

This transformative project was made possible through a $5.9 million Federal Government Department of Health ACAR capital grant, with Walara contributing an additional $900,000 to ensure its successful completion. Malcolm May extended heartfelt thanks on behalf of the community for this vital support.

The redevelopment reflects Walara’s commitment to providing high-quality, community-based aged care. Riverton, as the second-largest service centre in the Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council, plays a central role in supporting rural residents and commuters across several adjoining council areas. This investment strengthens aged care infrastructure in a region with deep historical roots in community care.

CEO Rob Veitch praised the collaborative efforts of Hodgkison Architects and Juncken Builders & Joinery, whose work delivered a contemporary, light-filled facility tailored to the needs of residents and staff.

Project Manager Michele Rademacher led the project on behalf of Walara, working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the redevelopment met community expectations. “This is a proud moment for Gilbert Valley,” said Mr. Veitch. “It enhances care, creates jobs, and strengthens our connection to the community.”

The Board also acknowledged the Huppatz family’s generous financial support, with a new wing named in their honour. Walara continues to welcome bequests and donations, with naming rights available for contributions of $150,000 or more, ensuring a lasting legacy for benefactors.

This redevelopment builds on a rich history of aged care in Riverton, dating back to 1951, and reflects Walara’s ongoing commitment to empowering older South Australians through compassionate, country-style care.

The redevelopment includes:

• A new wing with 4 spacious rooms and ensuites
• 2 additional rooms with ensuites in repurposed areas
• Refurbishment of 20 existing rooms and ensuites
• New smart TVs and furniture in upgraded rooms
• A new entrance and reception with coffee service
• A meeting lounge and vending area
• An extended lounge and dining room for the majority of resident activities
• New vinyl flooring, refurbished staff facilities, and a major fire services upgrade
• A new generator for full-site backup
• 400m² of replanted gardens, preserving resident-planted trees and roses
• A new Multi-Purpose room, DOC office, and meeting space
• A new ambulance drive-through and Porte-cochere
